$4 Million in Energy Effiency is Underway in Balboa Park

As we come to a close of 2011, we are proud to announce Balboa Park energy efficiency projects are on target and currently $4 million in projects are underway.  In 2010, The Balboa Park Partnership (the Partnership) was awarded $2 million of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) to implement energy efficiency projects in Balboa Park institutions.

In addition to EECBG funded projects, Balboa Park institutions have $2 million in completed and future energy efficiency projects that will leverage EECBG projects.  Leveraged projects are funded by a variety of sources including: the institution, SDG&E incentive and rebates programs, and SDG&E’s On Bill Financing program.

To date, the Partnership’s Sustainability Program has spent over half of the allocated $2 million EECBG funds on energy efficiency and conservation projects.  Thirteen projects have been completed from June – December 2011.  These projects completed in 2011 have expected $100,000 and 800,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) annual energy savings.  Institutions are noticing improved infrastructure benefits and energy savings.  For more on the grant, visit our EECBG Progress page.

Balboa Park Sustainability Program and Energy Efficiency:

As one of the United States’ great urban parks, Balboa Park has provided educational and cultural enrichment experiences for the San Diego region for nearly 100 years. Since 2008, The Partnership has worked closely with institutions, saving to-date over 6 million kilowatts hours and $1 million annually.

The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership (Partnership) is responsible for the successful administration of the Department of Energy (DOE)’s grant to elicit energy efficiency and conservation through retrofits of the existing museums and institutions. It is anticipated that the DOE funded additional energy measures will reduce energy consumption by 1.5 million kWh and provide energy saving of approximately $228,000,  The Partnership is well on their way to reaching their goal of $1.5 million savings annually by 2015.

Since2008, we've achieved noteworthy energy efficiency in Balboa Park:
Annual energy savings over 6 million kWh
Annual energy bill savings over $1 million
4,137 metric tons of CO2 equivalent diverted

The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership serves as the collaborative body and collective voice for 26 arts, science, and cultural institutions in Balboa Park. Together we achieve greater effectiveness, innovation, and excellence and contribute to the vitality and sustainability of Balboa Park. Our collective 500 trustees, 7,000 volunteers, and 3,500 staff serve more than 6.2 million visitors annually.
