Makeda Dread

Executive Director

Makeda Dread is the Executive Director and Founder of the WorldBeat Center. Makeda is a Cultural Anthropology Major and ethno-musicologist who has traveled to Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Brazil and numerous other countries researching and experiencing ethnic music throughout the world. And, in turn, has produced programs and artists from African, Latin Jazz, Cuban, Afro-beat, Reggae and Dance of which are all currently represented within the cultural center. Makeda is currently working on the African in the Americas project linking the African People of the Americas. Makeda has produced and narrated a documentary on the African influence and culture in Peru.

She is currently the only African-American female on commercial radio in San Diego. Makeda is the founder of her own radio show, Reggae Makossa, broadcast on Fusion Radio 102.5 FM (Tuesdays 7-9pm). She has been on the air for over 25 years.

Makeda is dedicated, committed and determined to raise world consciousness through music, dance, and arts. Promoting unity in diversity while teaching world peace.

The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership serves as the collaborative body and collective voice for 26 arts, science, and cultural institutions in Balboa Park. Together we achieve greater effectiveness, innovation, and excellence and contribute to the vitality and sustainability of Balboa Park. Our collective 500 trustees, 7,000 volunteers, and 3,500 staff serve more than 6.2 million visitors annually.
