The Balboa Park Learning Institute (BPLI)

The Balboa Park Learning Institute is a collaborative professional education program and learning community created by the 24 arts, science, and cultural institutions of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership. The Learning Institute empowers individuals and organizations with greater connections, knowledge and skills to advance professionalism, best practices and new thinking.

Upcoming Programs:

1) Communicating with Your Staff, Your Teams, Your Boss, Monday through Wednesday, March 8, 9 and 10, 10:45 to 2:00 p.m., and Monday, March 15, noon to 1:00 p.m. at the San Diego Natural History Museum. This program is designed to help you more effectively communicate and manage up, down and across your organization. The format includes a group viewing of an American Association of Museums webinar and follow-up discussion. Cost: $35 for all four sessions.

2) Why can’t I hear your website? Planning, Building and Maintaining Accessible Websites, Friday March 12, 2010, 8:30 am. to 5:00 p.m. at the San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum. This seminar includes a general, non-technical overview of accessibility and technical tools and techniques for developers. Cost: $25 for a half day; $45 for a full day.

3) Theory into Practice: Evaluating the Balboa Park Experience, March-December 2010, 8 sessions plus self-paced and small group activities, approximately 60 hours. How do people value their experiences in Balboa Park with the different arts, science, and cultural institutions? Find out by participating in this special leadership program focused on understanding evaluation practices, audience experiences, and learning communities. Special registration required. Cost scaled per institution.

4) Effective Project Management: Creating a Scope of Work, Wednesday, April 7, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the San Diego History Center. This program will explore the many considerations in developing a project scope of work, including goals and objectives, measures of success, schedule, milestones, budget, assumptions and constraints, action steps and deliverables, and roles and responsibilities. The format includes a group viewing of an American Association of Museums webinar and follow-up discussion. Cost: $12.

5) Sustainability Workshops: Energy-Efficient Upgrades & Energy Star Benchmarking, Wednesday, April 7, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at The Old Globe, Hattox Hall. FREE. In these two, back-to-back workshops, energy efficiency consultant Mark Jewell will explore the most time-efficient and cost-effective approaches to identifying energy-saving measures, and, address energy benchmarking best practices and techniques. The workshops will be followed by an optional behind-the-scenes tour of The Old Globe buildings with Facilities Manager Randy McWilliams. Cost: Free.

6) Emergency! Disaster Preparedness for Works on Paper, Wednesday, May 5, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the
San Diego History Center. This program will prepare you to conserve and preserve works on paper after a water emergency. The format includes a group viewing of an American Association of Museums webinar and follow-up discussion. Cost: $12.
