    Balboa Park Central promotes Balboa Park through the Visitors Center, Balboa Park Marketing, Passport to Balboa Park and the website, www.balboapark.org. Balboa Park Central is also responsible for the National Historic Landmark House of Hospitality building, which houses the Balboa Park Visitors Center, a police storefront, offices of cultural and educational organizations, and The Prado restaurant.

    The Balboa Park Online Collaborative’s mission is to facilitate and execute a fundamental change in the way museums, cultural arts and science institutions in Balboa Park approach the use of online technology by making online technology an integral part of the way the institutions fulfill their missions, interact with patrons, and collaborate; to improve their technology capabilities while reducing costs by bringing organizations with similar needs together on mutually beneficial projects; and to allow smaller institutions the benefit of having technology systems of the same quality as larger organizations, who in turn benefit from streamlined expenditures.

    The Centro Cultural de la Raza was founded in 1970 as a Chicano Community Cultural Center to facilitate artistic growth and cultural interchange in the San Diego/Tijuana region. Its mission is to promote, preserve, and create Mexican, Chicano, Indigenous and Latino art and culture. In support of this mission, the Centro provides art, drama, music, and dance classes and performances to the public and has given rise to many artistic groups, such as MALAF, the Mexican American Liberation Art Front, and Teatro Mestizo. The Centro's circular building is one of the largest Chicano cultural arts buildings in the Southwest.

    The House of Pacific Relations is a consortium of “houses” representing 31 countries that promotes multicultural goodwill and understanding through educational and cultural programs. The houses are located in historic cottages from the 1935-36 California-Pacific Exposition plus 4 new cottages where House of Pacific Relations’ member countries can offer visitors a window to their culture, history and traditions.

    The mission of the Japanese Friendship Garden Society of San Diego is to create a Japanese-style garden dedicated to the well being of all people that provides educational programs and encourages understanding of the Japanese heritage among people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures. The Garden has roots in the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which featured a Japanese Teahouse to symbolize strong cultural and commercial ties linking the United States and Japan.

    Dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of art of the people (mingei), Mingei International Museum exhibits folk art, craft and design from all eras and cultures of the world. Its two museums – located in Balboa Park and downtown Escondido – feature Southern California’s largest and richest collection of mingei. This art shares a direct simplicity and reflects a joy in making, by hand, useful objects of timeless beauty that are satisfying to the human spirit.  In 2008, the museum’s website was honored with a Webby Award for Cultural Institutions by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences.

    The Museum of Photographic Arts is one of the few museums in the United States designed exclusively to collect and present the world's finest examples of photographic art. MoPA’s collection currently includes more than 7,000 photographs that span the history of photography. In 2000 the museum expanded its gallery space and added a classroom, print-viewing room, 20,000-volume library, augmented archival facilities, and 226-seat state-of-the-art theater. The mission of the Museum of Photographic Arts is to inspire, educate and engage the broadest possible audience through the presentation, collection, and preservation of photography, film and video.

    As San Diego's only museum dedicated to science and technology, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center inspires life-long learning by furthering the public's understanding and enjoyment of science and technology. With hands-on exhibits, IMAX® films to watch and motion simulator rides to experience, the Fleet offers an educational, entertaining experience for over 500,000 visitors of all ages each year. The Fleet opened in 1973 and features the world’s first IMAX Dome Theater, which is about to undergo renovation. Among other awards, the Fleet has been honored by the City of San Diego as “2008 Recycler of the Year” and by the Center for Sustainable Energy as runner up for the 2007 Special Achievement by a Non-Profit for Excellence in Energy.

    The San Diego Air & Space Museum’s mission is to celebrate aviation and space flight history through preservation of significant artifacts, presentation of dynamic exhibits, and commemoration of the men and women who forged aerospace history; to educate the public about the social and historical significance of aerospace technology and its promise for the future; and to inspire students to excel in technology, mathematics and the sciences, and encourage all visitors to become life-long learners in support of aerospace advancement. The San Diego Air & Space Museum contains the only International Aerospace Hall of Fame. Its Library and Archives is also the third largest aerospace library in the nation and holds many unique, rare and one-of-a-kind items.

  10. San Diego Art Institute: Museum of the Living Artist

    The San Diego Art Institute's "Museum of the Living Artist" is a Center for the Visual Arts for the Southern California/Bahia California region. It promotes San Diego as a living arts community that fully integrates visual arts into everyday life through a three-fold mission of Education, Exhibition, and Outreach. SDAI's most visible activity focuses on showcasing the work of San Diego emerging area visual artists through a program of over 30 juried shows per year, featuring more than 3,000 works of painting, sculpture, prints, drawings, and mixed media. SDAI maintains a separate facility for education. Classes in life drawing, painting, water color, children's art, and various photography classes are a sampling of the SDAI art educational programs offered.

    The San Diego Automotive Museum has one of the finest collections of automobiles on the West Coast.  Founded in 1988, the museum is home to Louie Mattar’s world-famous Fabulous $75,000 Car (it holds the driving distance endurance record set in 1952) and several other rare vehicles, including a 1948 Tucker. It also houses an impressive collection of motorcycles—including Indian, Aprilia, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, and the quintessential American bike, Harley Davidson—and features special exhibits throughout the year. The museum offers special lectures and presentations as well as educational programs for school groups throughout the San Diego area as well.

    The San Diego Hall Of Champions Sports Museum was founded in 1946 to promote, preserve and recognize athletic achievement for the purpose of inspiring individuals of all ages to reach their full potential. Today the museum is the nation's largest multi-sport museum, boasting three levels of memorabilia and 68,000 square feet. The museum offers a state-of-the-art theatre, an interactive media center and fascinating displays on the nation's favorite sports in recognition of San Diego's outstanding athletic accomplishments and traditions.

    The San Diego Historical Society is encourages people of all ages to learn about, and enjoy, the history of San Diego – and to appreciate how our past, present, and future are interconnected.  SDHS’ museum and research center are located in the Casa de Balboa.  The museum offers permanent and changing exhibitions as well as a wide variety of programs for family, adult, and school audiences. The research center is open to the public and houses the preeminent collection of photographs, manuscripts, and other materials that document our region’s heritage.  SDHS also operates the Junipero Serra Museum on Presidio Hill, the site of the first European settlement on the West Coast.

    The San Diego Junior Theatre originally began as a program of San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in 1948. Today, it is the oldest continuing children’s theatre program in the country and has entertained over a million theatergoers. With classes at Balboa Park’s Casa del Prado and in North County at the La Jolla YMCA Firehouse, the Theatre is committed to providing engaging, innovative, high-quality theatre education and productions for children of all cultural heritages, ages, abilities and levels of interest. Although notable alumni include celebrities such as Dennis Hopper, Raquel Welch, and Annette Bening, the program’s dedication to providing quality education and building self-esteem has helped produce capable citizens in many fields of endeavor.

  15. San Diego Model Railroad Museum

    The mission of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is to preserve the heritage of railroading through a series of miniature representations of California railroads; to research and preserve the history of model railroading; and to educate the public in the many different aspects of railroading. At 27,000 sq. ft., the museum is the largest indoor model railroad display in the world. The individual HO and N scale layouts are among the largest of their type. Approximately 320 volunteers from the San Diego Model Railroad Club, La Mesa Model Railroad Club, the San Diego Society of N-Scale, and the San Diego 3-Railers construct the museum’s exhibits. Each club is responsible for the design, construction, funding, and operation of their exhibit space.

    Established in 1926, the San Diego Museum of Art is the region’s oldest and largest arts museum. It is dedicated to the enrichment of the community and the individual through the acquisition, preservation, presentation, and interpretation of works of art that demonstrate the enduring achievements of the human experience. The museum’s collections include Spanish and Italian old masters, a vast Asian collection, 19th and 20th century American paintings and sculpture, and an international selection of contemporary art in all media. SDMA offers educational and inspiring exhibitions, programs, and bilingual texts to more than 400,000 annual visitors.

    The San Diego Museum of Man preserves the record of human ecology and bio-cultural evolution, focusing on the peoples of the Western Americas with comparative examples from other areas. Following San Diego's 1915 Panama-California Exposition, a group of far-sighted citizens formed the Museum to keep the collections that were assembled for the Exposition in San Diego. Today, these collections have grown to over 72,000 objects. Drawing upon collection strengths in the Western Americas, ancient Egypt, and physical anthropology, the Museum fulfills its mission through exhibits, education, research, and publications. These components interact to create a dynamic learning environment for a broad, multicultural audience.

  18. San Diego Natural History Museum

    First established in 1874, the San Diego Natural History Museum is the second oldest scientific institution in Southern California and third west of the Mississippi. Its mission is to interpret the natural world through research, education and exhibits; promote understanding of the evolution and diversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California; and inspire in all a respect for nature and the environment. In addition to blockbuster exhibitions such as the 2007 Dead Sea Scrolls, the museum houses the highly acclaimed, binational Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias and the Environmental Science Education Center. SDNHM has played a pivotal role in regional initiatives, such as the establishment of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Torrey Pines State Park, and Anza Borrego State Park.

  19. San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory

    Founded in 1945, the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory gives talented student and pre-professional musicians an opportunity to study and perform classical repertoire at a highly advanced level. The sixth oldest continuously operating youth orchestra in the United States, the SDYS program has grown from one orchestra to three full symphony orchestras and a chamber orchestra at the advanced level, and four large ensembles for students at the intermediate and introductory levels. In addition, the organization supports a string quartet, woodwind quartet, flute choir, brass choir, two French Horn ensembles, an advanced percussion ensemble, and brass quintet. The organization trains over 450 musicians each season.

  20. Spanish Village Art Center

    The Spanish Village Art Center’s quaint buildings and courtyards were built in 1935 to depict a charming old village in Spain for the second California Pacific International Exposition. The popular and beautiful attraction was reopened in 1937 as an art center by a group of local artists. During World War II, the US Navy used the village for temporary barracks. In 1947, it was reclaimed and restored by the artists. Today Spanish Village is a thriving community of over 250 artists working in a variety of media.

Through vigorous publicity, we attract over 100,000 people annually, including more than 11,000 fifth graders to our Educational Outreach Program.     The Zoological Society of San Diego is dedicated to the conservation and research of endangered species and their habitats around the globe. ZSSD manages the 100-acre World-Famous San Diego Zoo, the 1,800-acre San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES) and is working to establish field stations in five key ecological areas worldwide. Endangered species programs include conservation work with Giant pandas, California condors, rhinos, Caribbean reptile species, Island bird species and many others. The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership serves as the collaborative body and collective voice for 26 arts, science, and cultural institutions in Balboa Park. Our collective 500 trustees, 7,000 volunteers, and 3,500 staff serve more than 6.2 million visitors annually.
