About The Program

The Partnership’s Balboa Park Sustainability Program's purpose is to educate, measure, promote and implement sustainability best practices in Balboa Park as well as strategically plan, coordinate and complete deferred maintenance initiatives.

Balboa Park is fast becoming a cornerstone for other cities to watch. Through collaboration and ongoing communication, the Sustainability Program has developed a shared vision for “greening” Balboa Park. It continues to advance solutions that will help protect Park resources and strengthen economic viability, while enhancing visitor experience and enjoyment.

Established in 2008, the award-winning Sustainability Program is a community-wide movement dedicated to educating, engaging, and inspiring others to implement sustainable practices. The program is a collaborative effort between the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership, the City of San Diego, and San Diego Gas & Electric. This collaboration is supported by an alliance of Partnership members, Park stakeholders, and Sustainability experts.  Together, we aim to establish Balboa Park as an exemplary model of sustainability for the 2015 Centennial Celebration.  View the Sustainability Program's Guiding Documentation.

CREATING CHANGE

Collaboration. Education. Conservation.

The Sustainability Program has leveraged opportunities to create change and build on its own success. To effectively create change on all levels, we have and continue to form interdependent relationships to improve infrastructure and develop education and partnership programs such as the Green Assistance Program (GAP) with the San Diego Green Building Council. SUCCESS AND SOLUTIONS

Efficiency. Innovation. Excellence.

The Sustainability Program has showcased Balboa Park as a leader in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Chosen as the winner of the 2010 Sustainability Showcase Award for Commercial Buildings by the California Sustainability Alliance, the Sustainability Program exemplifies optimal performance in areas such as sustainability policies, programs, practices, tools, and technologies.  For complete list of achievements, see out Case Studies page or view our EECBG Project Mini Case Studies Page.

Professional Development

Green Training, from entry level to LEED accreditation and beyond, is key to ensuring best practices are applied in the field. In January 2009, the Partnership launched the Balboa Park Sustainability Workshop Series. This successful series provides innovative and specialized training for staff and volunteers in Balboa Park and the public about sustainability principles and practices. This series is presented in concert with the Partnership’s Balboa Park Learning Institute.
