On November 15, the Sustainability Program hosted  the Balboa Park Sustainability Walk-About. Local leaders in environmental studies got a first hand look at the sustainable practices and ambitions of 5 cultural institutions.  The purpose of this series is to expand community awareness of the value of energy efficiency and  sustainability practices, while showcasing the amazing institutions of Balboa Park.  Seven videos are now available online.
The American Association for Museums and LearningTimes help the Green Museums Online Conference.  Rory Ruppert , Director of Environmental Sustainability presented a spotlight case study  on behalf of Balboa Park Sustainability Program.  Rory spoke on what is going on in Balboa Park institutions.  Her narrated powerpoint is available online.  The Sustainability Program partnered with the Learning Institute to hold this online conference at the San Diego Natural History Museum April 19, 2011 to give San Diego participants the opportunity to interact and ask questions to the presenters.  Online conferences reduce travel and our carbon footprint.

 

January 21, 2009 The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership kicked off it's Sustainabilty Program.  Mayor Jerry Sanders spoke at the workshop with keynote speaker, David Gottfried.  A video was created to capture the event.

 

August 2010 the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy hosted the 2010 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Builidngs.  A diverse group of professionals from around the world gathered at this preeminent meeting to discuss the technological basis for, and practical implementation of, reducing energy use and climate impacts associated with buildings. Presentations and discussions relate to the theme, “The Climate for Efficiency is Now.”  As a part of Panel 4, the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership submitted a White Paper and was invited to create a history board of the Sustainability Program.  Sterling Insights also created a case study of the history board creative process. 

 

Balboa Park Cultural Partnership is a featured case study in Rachel Madan's upcoming book, Sustainable Museums: Strategies for the 21st Century.  Sustainable Museums provides a system enabling you to start making changes that are both transformational and lasting. Balboa Park Cultural Partnership has been honored by the California Sustainability Alliance with the 2010 Sustainability Showcase Award for Commercial Buildings.  2010 award recipients demonstrated exemplary leadership in advancing sustainability goals in their operations and communities. Their efforts are proof that even in tough economic times, incorporating sustainability measures into everyday practice is critical to economic as well as environmental well being. January 5, 2011 The Balboa Park Environmental Sustainability office coordinated with Hal Clement of Channel 10 news to develop a featured article and video of Balboa Park.  The article and video focus on the Park's energy cost savings.   In the article Rory is quoted on how environmental sustainability started in the Park and the Park's energy goals.  The article highlights the collaborative effort of the City of San Diego and the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership and future projects coming with Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant.  Rory Ruppert, BPCP and Park Staff explain how energy efficiency saves the Park over $700,000 annually.  Read the full Channel 10 article online.

 

January, 2011 San Diego’s KUSI, Brad Perry interviewed Rory Ruppert, BPCP; April Sharp, San Diego Gas & Electric; Doug Kot, U..S. Green Building Council- San Diego Chapter;  and Makeda Dread, World Beat Center.  Topics include upcoming events in the Park, SDG&E and USGBC partnership with BPCP, and LEED certification.

The Western Museum Association (WMA) held the 2011 Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii September 23 -26, 2011.  This was a unique opportunity for WMA and fellow museum professionals to meet and exchange ideas and best practices.  The Partnership's Rory Ruppert presented on Balboa Park's collaboration around sustainability on the Models of Collaboration board with Berit Ness, Program Coordinator of Washington Art Consortium and Adrienne McGraw, Executive Director of Exhibit Envoy.  Read more and view Rory's PowerPoint.
